Abstract:
Bioremediation is an innovative and promising technology available for removal and recovery of heavy metals from contaminated media. It is a method of using organisms to absorb heavy metals and low cost approach with no secondary pollution. Bioremediation by macrofungi to degrade pollutants or wastes is referred as mycoremediation. Macrofungi like mushrooms can produce enzymes and have ability to degrade and accumulate a good range of toxic metals. In this paper, the research status and advances in the field of mycoremediation approach using different species of mushrooms was reviewed. Generally mushrooms uses three effective strategy to recover contaminated or polluted soils are: 1) Biodegradation 2) Bioconversion and 3 ) Biosorption. Mushrooms can degrade and recycle wastes and pollutants to its mineral constituents; can convert wastes, sludges, pollutants into useful forms. Besides they can uptake heavy metals from a substrate using biosorption method which is very effective to reclaim polluted lands . Different wild and cultivated mushroom species are used in the mycoremediation technique which degrade a lot of organic and inorganic pollutants and produce vendible products. Mycoremediation app roach is still in infancy but it has a significant potentiality of pollutants or metal remediation from polluted soil. We can conclude that those mushroom species can biodegrade, bioconvert or absorb the pollutants and metals effectively should be given highest preference. Further research is needed to justify this method in future as an easy, cost effective and eco-friendly tool.
