Cabomba caroliniana submerged plant Jiangsu wetland biological invasion
Cabomba caroliniana, a perennial aquatic plant originated in North and South America, has been naturalized in China. To explore its distribution in Jiangsu province, we investigated 40 wetlands, including over 700 plots. The results showed that C. caroliniana has been widely distributed in Jiangsu province, with the northernmost latitude of 33° 41’N. Its distribution scope and extent in 2009 were greater than in 2003. There were 17 submerged plant species and 11 floating plant species in the water bodies inhabited by C. caroliniana. The most frequently coexisting plants with C. caroliniana were submerged plants Hydrilla verticillata, Vallisneria natans and Ceratophyllum demersum, and floating plants Salvinia natans, Lemna minor, Azolla imbircata and Nymphoides peltatum, with the percentage of co-appearance over 50%, respectively, indicating that the communities with these plants were easy to be invaded by C. caroliniana. Considering the high possibility of human dispersal and similarity in environment and climate conditions between Jiangsu and its native area, C. caroliniana will possibly spread over the whole area of Jiangsu within several years, if close attention would not be paid to and effective measures taken on this invasive plant.
