Abstract:
Background:. For its biological characteristics of large biomass, fast growing, and strong resistance, etc, Pennisetum hydridum, a combination of environmental phytoremediation material, high quality forage, and energy plant, raised public concern in recent years. Summary and Description: In this review, the recent advances and application of Pennisetum hydridum in the fields of ecological environment, livestock feedstuff, bioenergy and other aspects are summaried, which could benefit the research of comprehensive utilization of Pennisetum hydridum biomass resources. Results are demonstrated that the importance of Pennisetum hydridum in treatment of remediating degerated soil, purifying sewage and controlling invasive species, which means heavy metals, nitrogen and phosphorus, and invasive speicies can be effectively removed by Pennisetum hydridum. The main approaches of forage utilization are green fodder, hay, ammonification and ensiling, among these methods, ensiling achieves a balanced nutrition and allevates the defficiency of livestock in spring and winter. Pyrolysis and combustion, biogas fermentation, and bioethanol fermentation make the conversion of Pennisetum hydridum to bioenergy become a reality. Biomass and cellulose content are the key factors affecting energy utilization potential, but also the basis of developing fibreboard, nanocellulose membrane, edible fungus culture medium. Conclusion and Prospect: Finally, this article also analyse the existing problems in current researches, emphasizing on optimizing technology and expanding utilization apporoaches of Pennisetum hydridum biomass resources in the future. Simultaneously, a comprehensive utilization mode of biomass resource of Pennisetum hydridum is introduced, including using the harvested environmental phytoremediation material Pennisetum hydridum as high quality forage, energy plant, as well as the sources of other industrial products, possessing the wasted residue into organic fertilizer.
