Biomass, such as crop straw, is an important raw material for the biogas production by anaerobic digestion . The trans-seasonal storage requirements of biomass are critical for a year-round continuous supply of feedstock for biogas plants throughout the year , in some cases even of extended durations because of its inherent seasonal harvest characteristics. Therefore, how to realize sustainable supplementation of biomass is the primary task. In order to connect the link of biomass storage and biogas utilization and break through key conception and governor vessels between the downstream and upstream systems of biogas plants, the preservation method, including dry and wet storage, were reviewed in detail. Furthermore, the wet storage method, such as ensiling, hay silage, co-ensiling, were emphatically analyzed according to the different characteristics of various biomass. On this basis, a series of strategies for process regulation during storage were explored in terms of lactic acid bacteria, bio-enzyme, chemical additives, compound additives, etc., so as to achieve the goal of high-quality, long-term preservation, and obtain favorable energy conversion efficiency. Moreover , the effects of ensiling process and diversified regulation strategies on biogas production performance were summarized, and the biogas production performance before and after storage was compared. At present, the trans-seasonal storage and anaerobic digestion process of biomass are be widely investigated respectively, but the correlative mechanism between the upstream and downstream is not fully clear, which was imperative to be evaluated according to the biomass properties to maximize energy conservation and energy conversion. In conclusion, ensiling of biomass, the wet-storage method, is an effective method of preserving the nutrient and ensuring sustainable supplementation , the correlative mechanism between storage and downstream biogas fermentation are the main research orientation in the future.
