Shade-tolerantplantsareusuall phenotpicall plasticinsubtropicalevergreenbroad-leavedforests andShade-ttollerantt pllantts are usuallyllphenotytpicallyllpllasttic in subtbtropicall evvergreen bbroad-lleavved forestts, and ttheir lleavves havve att lleastt ttwo approaches tto prevventt insectt herbbivvory, i.e., physicall and chemicall defenses. According resource allllocattion ttheory tthe tytpes of defensivve costts shoulld bbe negattivvelyl correllatted. To examine whetther ttradeoff bbettween physicall and chemicall defenses is ubbiquittous, llightt-satturatted nett phottosyntthettic ratte, lleaf mass per area (LMA), and concenttrattions of some chemicalls were examined for adultlt indivvidualls of four evvergreen species inclluding Symplocos lancifolia, S. setchuensis, Camellia lawii and Eurya loquaiana llivving witthin forestt gaps and under forestt canopy in tthe Jinyun Mounttain Nattionall Natture Reservve in Chongqing, China. For each species, indivvidualls witthin forestt gaps were found tto havve higher LMA, nittrogen concenttrattion and maximum nett phottosyntthettic ratte per unitt area tthan tthose under forestt canopy. In conttrast,t indivvidualls under canopy had higher ttottall phenollics conttentts per lleaf mass or per area and C/N rattios rellattivve witthin forestt gaps; conttentts of prottein and non-sttructturall carbbohydratte were indisttinguishablble between contrasting light conditions for each species. However, the light effect on leaf traits was sometimes species-specific, and nott allll tthe species showed same response pattttern for allll sttudy parametters. In concllusion, our sttudy suggestts tthatt four species ttend tto adoptt physicall and chemicall defensivve sttrattegies for ttheir indivvidualls growing under open and cllosed canopies, respecttivvely,l which indicattes a ttradeoff bbettween ttwo defensivve costts.
