Abstract:
The genus Phragmites is widely distributed in the world and extensively used in constructed wetlands. There are several variations of Phragmites worldwide, but only three in China: P. karka (Retz.) Trin. ex Steud., P. japonica Steud. and P. australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. P. australis is recognized as the most commonly used species. Habitant adaptation of Phragmite can develop various ecotypes, which are characterized by specific physiological and genetic properties. Different ecotypes of Phragmites, and its distribution and biological properties of three variations in China were described in this paper. Meanwhile, decontamination performances and problems on constructed wetlands planted with Phragmites were also discussed. Furthermore, it was proposed that future researches on Phragmites were mainly emphasized on ecotype investigation and wastewater purification by different ecotypes, as well as comparison on purification capacities by Phragmites and other wetland plants.
