Abstract:
A coculture of a new strain of anaerobic, propionate-oxidizing bacteria, strain LYP, was enriched from an anaerobic digestor and isolated in monoxenic coculture with Methanospirillum hungateii JF-1 as a H2-and formate-using partner. The coculture formed acetate,CO2 and methane from propionate, along with smaller amounts of butyrate. The growth and methanogenesis by the coculture was stimulated by the presence of acetate-or butyrate-degrading organisms.
