Abstract:
A new mesophilic cellulolytic bacterium, Clostridium aldrichii was isolated 7 times from high dilution samples ol a poplar-fed anaerobic digester over a peried of two years.High numbers and repeated isolation ate the two criteria for claiming that C.aldrichii was a predominant inhabitant of that ecosystem.Colony and cell morphology observation, and immunological test (ELISA) with polyclonal antibodies of the type strain were used to confirm that the 7 isolates were the same species. These results showed that C.aldrichii was a predominant cellulolytic bacterium with stable population of 106-107 per mL in the digester from September 1986 to August 1988.
